These terms govern your use of General Text and its services. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. Please read them alongside our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy.

General Text is operated by the General Text & Computing Company, an imprint of Saltbark LLC. (“Saltbark”, “we”, “us”). “General Text” refers to our desktop and web applications, the app gallery, and the sync and hosting services we provide.
General Text requires an account, and the desktop application is free to download and use. Work is organised into workspaces, each of which is billed on its own. A workspace with no subscription is free within published limits (one person, three apps, and 1 GB of storage at the time of writing), and you may keep using it indefinitely. A subscription raises those limits and lets you add the people you collaborate with.
If a subscription ends, we do not delete your content. The workspace becomes read-only through our servers for a period stated in the app, after which it stops syncing and the data is retained rather than dropped. Copies already on your own devices are unaffected and keep working.
You are responsible for the activity under your account and for keeping your credentials secure. You must provide accurate information and be old enough to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction. You may close your account at any time.
Your files are yours. You retain all rights to the content you create, upload, or sync. You grant us only the limited permission needed to store and transmit that content so we can operate the sync and collaboration features you ask us to. Synced content is end-to-end encrypted, so in practice we store and move it without being able to read it. We do not claim ownership of your work, and we do not sell it.
You are responsible for the content you store and share, and for having the rights to it. You must not use General Text to store or distribute unlawful material or to infringe others’ rights.
General Text runs small apps that read and write your files. Apps are sandboxed. Apps published to the gallery by other users are their responsibility, not ours; fork and run third-party apps at your own discretion. If you publish an app, you are responsible for it and for the rights to everything it includes.
A subscription is per workspace, monthly or annually, at the price shown at checkout, and includes a stated number of people; each person past that number is billed in addition. Your subscription renews automatically until you cancel; you can cancel at any time and keep access through the end of the paid period. Changes to the number of people are prorated.
Our order process and payments are handled by Stripe, which is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Stripe handles billing, payment, and the collection and remittance of applicable taxes, and provides customer service for billing enquiries. Refunds are described in our Refund Policy.
Do not misuse the service: no attempts to breach security or access data that is not yours, no interference with the service’s operation, no unlawful, abusive, or fraudulent activity, and no use that violates these terms. We may suspend or terminate accounts that do.
The service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law. We work to keep your synced data safe and durable, but you are responsible for keeping your own copies. Because your files are plain text on your own machine, you always can. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Synced content is end-to-end encrypted, and we hold no key that can open it. You are responsible for your encryption passphrase and recovery key. If you lose both, your synced data cannot be recovered by us, or by anyone, by design. This is the cost of encryption only you can open, and we cannot make an exception to it.
We may update these terms; if we make material changes we will give reasonable notice. You may stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or end the service, or your access to it, for the reasons described here or as required by law. Your local files remain yours and exportable.
